Farmers Weekly Interactive job profile with alumnus William Bartholomew, 33, from Worcestershire.
William completed the BSc (Hons) Countryside and Environmental Management course at Harper and carried out his placement with the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust at its upland research base in Inverness-shire.
William, 33, now works for Natural England as a lead land management and conservation adviser.
His job involves working with farmers and other land managers in the North Yorkshire Moors and establishing Countryside Stewardship schemes to maintain or enhance the natural environment on the moors. In addition the North Yorkshire Moors are one of the largest sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) in the UK and the site has a range of important upland habitats and significant upland breeding bird populations for William to oversee.
Conservation advisers play a key role in improving the natural environment, working closely with landowners and farmers. It is a sector that has grown in importance, with government policy placing emphasis on land management practices and stewardship schemes that improve biodiversity, reduce pollution and improve quality.
